NRC-IRAP Youth Employment Program (YEP)

NRC-IRAP delivers its Youth Employment Program (YEP) on behalf of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES) with financial assistance to hire highly skilled post-secondary graduates.  SMEs benefit from the knowledge of freshly minted minds while graduates gain valuable work experience that will open doors to the future.

What does the YEP offer?

This Program provides financial assistance to innovative SMEs in Canada to hire post-secondary science, engineering, technology business and liberal arts graduates.  Graduates work on innovative projects within the SME environment and may participate in research, development and commercialization of technologies.  In some cases, SMEs may be collaborating with a National Research Council of Canada (NRC) institute or with the Industry Canada Communications Research Centre (CRC).  In addition to meeting the needs of innovative SMEs, this Program facilitates the transition of highly skilled young people to a rapidly changing labour market.

Are you eligible?

To qualify, SMEs must be incorporated and for-profit, ready to enhance their innovation capacity, and willing to establish a trusting relationship with NRC-IRAP.

Graduates must:

  • be Canadian Citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  • be between 15 and 30 years old (inclusive)
  • have graduated from a post-secondary institution
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance benefits
  • be legally entitled to work in according to relevant provincial legislation and regulations

Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program

The CREATE Program will provide an enriched integrative experience for the next generation of researchers in the NSE, and will help develop the professional and personal skills needed to build capacity within Canada’s research community to address significant research challenges. The program will better prepare new researchers for their future careers in academia and in other sectors. To build on Canada’s research strengths and priorities and to enhance our success, at least 60 percent of the CREATE funding will be directed to the following priority areas: Environmental science and technologies; Natural resources and energy; Health and related life sciences and technologies; and, Information and communications technologies.

Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research Scholar-in-Residence Award

NLCAHR’s Scholar-in-Residence Award provides funding for a researcher to spend one or two terms at Memorial University. The visiting researcher will provide input into local research activities, help build linkages and facilitate collaboration of local researchers with external researchers and research organizations. The goals of NLCAHR’s Scholar-in-Residence program are: to bring to Newfoundland and Labrador established scholars from elsewhere who are actively involved in research linked to the Centre’s priority themes; to build linkages and facilitate collaboration of local researchers with external researchers and research organizations; to provide input into our ongoing research activities and research plans as well as to the work of graduate students at Memorial

National Sciences and Engineering Research Council Northern Research Internships

Northern Research Internships are tenable in a northern Canadian organization that will benefit from the research conducted, either directly or through the sharing of knowledge. Partner organizations can include colleges, federal, provincial and territorial government departments, companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or communities. Students/fellows should consult with their supervisors and/or the potential research organizations themselves to find a suitable partner for an internship. Program objectives: Supports senior undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing studies in the Canadian North by facilitating extended stays and subsidizing the costs associated with activities in the North; Enhances the interaction between graduate students/postdoctoral fellows and Northerners who have a stake in northern research. NSERC portion: Up to $10,000 for a 16-week internship (includes a logistics allowance of up to $4,000). Additional Supplement: Minimum of $4,000 for a 16-week internship.

There are no fixed deadlines for this program. Applications should be made at least eight weeks before the start of a proposed internship.

The Canadian Thoracic Society AllerGen – Clinician – Scientist Asthma Award

The award is provided to undertake training projects in asthma research, across two main strands: basic research, which includes investigations into the causes of asthma and disease mechanisms; and clinical research, into treatments and management of asthma. This includes the psychosocial aspects of asthma and non-drug approaches to managing asthma.

The Canadian Thoracic Society Research Fellowship Program

The aim of this program is to encourage highly qualified graduate students enrolled in a PhD program who are undertaking research in the field of respiratory health. At the time of submission, applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program (MSc or PhD). Applicants possessing a medical degree and enrolled in a PhD program, but who do not hold a license to practice medicine in a province or territory of Canada, are eligible to apply for this award.

Silverhill Institute of Environmental Research and Conservation Summer Research Fellowships

The Silverhill Institute grants are available for graduate students to provide assistance in carrying out applied research projects. The intent is to provide funding for applied research projects with a Canadian or North American focus being carried out at either the Masters or PhD levels. The amount of the major grant is $3,500; smaller awards of $500 are also available.

The Canadian Water Resources Association offers five scholarships

The Canadian Water Resources Association annually offers five scholarships.  These scholarships are available to graduate students whose programs of study focus upon applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources. The scholarships will have the following values:

  • Dillon Consulting Scholarship - $5,000: This scholarship will be awarded to the highest ranked of the applicants.  Funding is provided by Dillon Consulting Ltd. on an annual basis.
  • Ken Thomson Scholarship - $2,000: This scholarship will be awarded to the second highest ranked of the applicants. The Ken Thomson Scholarship is awarded from a special fund set up in his honour. 
  • 3 Scholarships - $1,500 each: These scholarships are funded from the general funds of the Canadian Water Resources Association.
