Community – University Research Alliance

The purpose of the program is to support the creation of alliances between community organizations and postsecondary institutions which, through a process of ongoing collaboration and mutual learning, will foster innovative research, training and the creation of new knowledge in areas of importance for the social, cultural or economic development of Canadian communities.
Specific objectives are to:
• promote sharing of knowledge, resources and expertise between postsecondary institutions and organizations in the community;
• enrich research, teaching methods and curricula in postsecondary institutions;
• reinforce community decision-making and problem-solving capacity; and
• enhance students’ education and employability by means of diverse opportunities to build their knowledge, expertise and work skills through hands-on research and related experience.

In a move to accelerate research with strong commercialization potential in local companies, Genome BC has launched a new funding competition entitled, Strategic Opportunities Fund for Industry (SOFi).
The fund is designed to support small to medium-sized life science enterprises (SMEs) incorporated in BC working on genomic applications relating to agriculture, bioenergy, environment, fish and fisheries, forestry, human health and mining.

Biotech Investment Award Program

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) seeks proposals for its Biotech Investment Award program (BIA). The goal of this initiative is to drive and accelerate the development of innovative and effective treatments for myeloma. This program is designed to: a) provide resources necessary for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to rapidly test therapeutics in multiple myeloma; and b) to foster collaboration with academic myeloma experts, as needed. BIA aims to remove barriers that limit the development of novel drugs for myeloma. This is a milestone-driven initiative. Payments will be made after successful completion of milestones as outlined in each applicant’s proposal.

In 2006, through its Youth and Public Outreach unit of the CIHR Communications and Public Outreach Branch, CIHR launched the Synapse – Youth Connection program as a way to create a scientific junction between health researchers/scientists and Canada’s young people.
Synapse encourages CIHR-funded researchers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to become mentors by passing on their passion for health research to young Canadians who become their trainees.

Other: CIHR Café Scientifique Program (2010)

CIHR’s Café Scientifique program, created through the Youth and Public Outreach Unit of CIHR’s Communications and Public Outreach Branch, is made up of informal events, not lectures between the general public and health research experts regarding a particular health-related issue of popular interest. CIHR’s Café Scientifiques cover a wide range of topics, from nutrition to mental health at the workplace to air pollution.
For that reason, these events are all about accessibility. CIHR Café Scientifiques take place at a café, a pub or a restaurant and do not require that the participants have a science degree. The informal conversations about a particular health subject may provide answers to any questions that are on the minds of Canada’s general population.

Chairs for Women in Science and Engineering Program

The goal of the program is to increase the participation of women in science and engineering and to provide role models for women active in, and considering, careers in these fields. Collaborative Health Research Projects Program

The Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) program supports focused collaborative research projects involving any field of the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences. If successful, the projects will be novel and lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, or economic development in health-related areas. The proposed project may range from fundamental knowledge creation to research on knowledge application relevant to industry or public policy. Typically, support will be for up to three years for defined projects (which are not existing research programs), with clear milestones and decision points.

Major Resources Support Program

The objective of the MRS program is to facilitate the effective access by Canadian academic researchers to major and unique national or international (based in Canada) experimental or thematic research resources by financially assisting these resources to remain in a state of readiness for researchers to use. MRS grants are not intended to support resources that are standard in a discipline or commonly available in Canadian universities. The MRS program also aims to facilitate access by Canadian academic researchers, who come together as national consortia, to major international resources located outside Canada, the equivalent of which is not available in Canada. This support excludes any direct financial support towards the operating and maintenance costs of such resources.

2010 Unsolicited Research Program

The WateReuse Foundation is seeking pre-proposals for funding consideration under its 2010 Unsolicited Research Program. The total amount of funds approved for the Foundation’s 2010 Unsolicited Research Program projects is $301,531. BCNRI Partnership Research Program

Through the BCNRI Partnership Research Program, funding will be available to support applicants that are successful in national or international peer reviewed research team or operating grant competitions that require match/partner funding as a condition of award. To be eligible for consideration, applicants for partnership funding must demonstrate that:
• the research focus of the application meets the BCNRI goals of supporting practice-relevant nursing health services research within a BCNRI priority area outlined in V. Priority Areas of Research
• the proposed program/project supports collaboration among BC researchers and practitioners (policy or practice), and with researchers across Canada, so that BC may benefit and learn from investigators external to the province to advance nursing health services research within BC.

BCNRI Research Project Program

The Research Project Program is aimed at building linkages and collaborations among academia, nurses and the broad health services practice and policy communities to develop, conduct and apply the findings of practice-relevant health services research that addresses the BCNRI priority areas. The Research Project Program will provide funds to cover the direct operating costs of four types of research projects:
• Research Synthesis Projects;
• Research Demonstration Projects;
• Pilot/Seed Research Projects; or
• Research Knowledge Exchange Projects
