The award funded through this competition is the Mentored Clinician Scientist award that is aimed at clinician scientists at the beginning of their research careers. These are individuals both clinically practicing and conducting research at one of the following sites: VGH, UBC Hospital, or GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, who want to reduce their clinical practice commitments in order to continue developing their research careers as independent investigators.

Doctoral Research Awards are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a PhD degree in a health-related field in Canada or abroad. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.

Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in master’s or doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. The CGS will be offered to the top-ranked applicants at each level (master’s and doctoral) and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered an NSERC PGS. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields. NSERC encourages interested and qualified Aboriginal students to apply.

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) supports research in developing countries to promote growth and development. The result is innovative, lasting local solutions that aim to bring choice and change to those who need it most. IDRC’s Climate Change and Water Program (CCW) helps developing country researchers to understand the consequences of climate change on water resources and to find ways to improve the ability of citizens and governments to adapt to the changing environment.
The purpose of CCW’s Adaptation H2O Graduate Research Awards is to build the research capacity in developing countries by providing awards to graduate students working on subjects related to climate change and water.

The research should seek cropping system changes that will lead to: sustainable and increased crop yields; production of more and improved animal feed; improved soil and water conservation; improved weed control, and/or biological fixation of nitrogen. Projects should be planned and executed in cooperation with an international agricultural research centre, or with a developing-country institution involved in agricultural research that has an applied on-farm orientation.

The Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute, formerly the Cancer Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, answers the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology. It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology.

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health sciences. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

AllerGen NCE Inc., the Allergy, Genes and Environment Network (AllerGen), a national research network, is pleased to announce the launch of a national competition for an Emerging Clinician-Scientist Research Fellowship valued at $250,000 over two years. The goal of the AllerGen Emerging Clinician-Scientist Research Fellowship is to enable Canadian Clinical Immunologists and Allergists to pursue allergy, asthma and/or anaphylaxis academic research training immediately following their Clinical Immunology and Allergy sub-specialty training in order to:
• Strengthen the academic capacity of Canadian Clinical Immunology and Allergy sub-specialists
• Increase Canadian capacity for translational Clinical Immunology and Allergy research
• Facilitate enhanced patient care through excellence in basic and clinical Allergy and related immune disease research.

Priority Announcements on Fellowship competitions offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas or mandates. The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Foundation is pleased to announce one two-year fellowship to support training in clinical practice research, which is defined as "clinical research that evaluates translation of evidence into best clinical practice." This may include evaluation of health services, quality of care, and implementation of proven therapies, physician performance, or patient adherence. The fellowship is intended to create unique training opportunities, previously difficult to access for neurologists. The fellowship is supported by the AAN and the AAN Foundation.

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Foundation is pleased to announce a two-year fellowship to support clinical research training in the field of headache. Each fellowship will consist of a commitment of $55,000 per year for two years, plus $10,000 per year for tuition to support formal education in clinical research methodology at the applicant’s institution or elsewhere. Supplementation of the stipend with other grants or by the fellowship institution is permissible, but fellows may not accept other fellowships, similar awards, or have another source of support for more than 50 percent of their research salary while holding an AAN Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship.
