Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship

Deadline:
July 29, 2010
Agency:
JDRF

The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to attract qualified and promising health scientists, to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training, and to assist these promising individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position. JDRF envisions the 3-year award term as a period in which fellows will receive critical research training that will position them to work at the leading edge of their chosen field. An additional, optional 1-year “transition” award will further assist fellows to proceed to independent faculty or research appointments and will serve as a bridge between the fellowship and independent competitive research funding. During the fellowship phase, the applicant is required to work with a sponsor who can provide a training environment conducive to beginning a career in diabetes-relevant research. At the time of activating the award, the applicant must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) from an accredited institution and must not be simultaneously serving an internship or residency.

Developing and Rewarding Community-Engaged Scholarship: Towards the Transformation of University Policies and Practices

Deadline:
July 12, 2010
Agency:
CCPH/CSAHS

Community-engaged scholarship (CES) and community-academic partnerships are gaining momentum in Canadian higher education. The tri-council funding bodies have moved aggressively towards increasing support for community-engaged research and knowledge mobilization efforts. The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation has invested in community-academic partnerships across the country through their social innovation and community service learning programs. In spite of these important developments, university reward systems that acknowledge and encourage CES have often lagged behind the research and learning activities. Much work needs to be done within university cultures to institutionalize and sustain community engagement as a core value and practice. Creating a cadre of faculty members whose focus is CES – and universities that recognize and reward them – are central to addressing this issue.
