Canadian Ecohealth Training and Awards Program

As part of the educational mandate of this initiative, CoPEH-Can will be hosting an 11-day short course entitled Ecosystem Approaches to Health (Ecohealth) in Montréal, Québec at the Université du Québec à Montréal from June 2 - 13, 2010. A maximum of twenty-five participants will be accepted into the 2010 short course, including up to twenty graduate students (eligible for “Graduate Training Awards”) and up to five career development positions for those actively working in a field in which ecosystem approaches can be applied (eligible for “Career Development Training”).

Duchesnay Fellowship

The Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health attributes two Duchesnay fellowships every year to resident students in obstetrics and gynaecology who desire to complete an elective in a health care center of a developing country. The fellowships cover four to eight weeks and the amount varies from $2,500CAD to $4,500CAD according to the length of the elective. A $700CAD lump-sum will be allocated to the local supervisor of the elective.

Janus Scholarship for Global Health Projects 2010

2010 TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund

Canadian Nurses Foundation scholarships are awarded based on merit.
To be eligible the applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada; must be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College; normally be enrolled in Nursing PhD, and if not (health related field) must provide a rationale for how their studies will promote advancement in nursing.

L'Oréal Canada For Women in Science Research Excellence Fellowships, with the support of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO

Summer Student Research Awards 2010

Part of the Nasivvik Centre’s mandate involves the support of research and training for students. This year, the Nasivvik Centre is pleased to announce its seventh call for Summer Student Research Awards 2010 (undergraduate level).
The Nasivvik Centre will provide funding for undergraduate students to gain experience by participating in research during the summer months (May-August). Funding support shall be at the CIHR established level of $1,313/month for four months with a maximum award of $5,252. Applications for funding should be made by the researcher supervising/hiring the student.

The primary goal of the CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program is to further develop international collaborative efforts between researchers. The short term goal is to enable promising individuals to be mentored by prominent Canadian researchers. The long term objective of the Program is to enable promising scientists and clinicians from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC), as identified by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations (UN), to be exposed to some of the best science, laboratories and training environments in Canada. The next two rounds of this program will focus on sub continental South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The goals of the Program are to encourage a broad spectrum of foreign post-doctoral scholars (PhDs, MDs or health professionals) to train in health and health related areas which in the long term, would lead to the development of sustainable programs to help people in developing countries.

Canadian Harkness Associate Award

Up to two Harkness awards for mid-career health services and health policy researchers, decision makers (health system managers, clinical leaders, and government policy makers) or journalists are awarded annually through open competition. Up to two Canadian Harkness Associates are selected each year. While Canadian Associates are not expected to reside in the United States for the 12 months, the recipients are fully integrated into the Harkness Fellowships, undertake a parallel research project or case study at their home institution, and participate in all five Harkness fellowship seminars during the course of the year.

Independent Investigator Award

NARSAD’s Independent Investigator Award Program provides support for investigators during the critical period between the initiation of research and the receipt of sustained funding. A two-year award up to $50,000 per year (maximum of $100,000 for two years) is provided to scientists at the associate professor level or equivalent, who are clearly independent and have won national competitive support as a principal investigator. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to schizophrenia, major affective disorders, or other serious mental illnesses. The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities.
