As part of the educational mandate of this initiative, CoPEH-Can will be hosting an 11-day short course entitled Ecosystem Approaches to Health (Ecohealth) in Montréal, Québec at the Université du Québec à Montréal from June 2 - 13, 2010. A maximum of twenty-five participants will be accepted into the 2010 short course, including up to twenty graduate students (eligible for “Graduate Training Awards”) and up to five career development positions for those actively working in a field in which ecosystem approaches can be applied (eligible for “Career Development Training”).

The Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health attributes two Duchesnay fellowships every year to resident students in obstetrics and gynaecology who desire to complete an elective in a health care center of a developing country. The fellowships cover four to eight weeks and the amount varies from $2,500CAD to $4,500CAD according to the length of the elective. A $700CAD lump-sum will be allocated to the local supervisor of the elective.

This scholarship is intended to support CFPC members in activities engaging in global health care projects either in Canada or abroad, and in promoting family medicine abroad. Clinical activities, teaching, research or conference attendance will be considered.

The International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) is please to announce the availability of Graduate Fellowships in Alternatives in Scientific Research. IFER is dedicated to the development and implementation of scientifically valid alternatives to the use of animals in research, product testing, and education. IFER is also committed to programs designed to increase public awareness of such alternatives. The purpose of these Graduate Fellowships in Alternatives in Scientific Research is to provide monetary assistance to graduate students whose programs of study seem likely to have an impact in one or more of these areas.

The Postdoctoral position(s) in Health Research at Statistics Canada will:
• Offer postdoctoral researchers an opportunity to conduct policy-relevant health research within an environment that is rich with mentoring and training opportunities ;
• Provide postdoctoral researchers access to survey and administrative data holdings;
• Promote awareness and use of these data holdings in the general research community.

One of the goals of the Kloshe Tillicum Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research BCWAY is to recruit and improve access to Aboriginal health research training programs and promote and support health research careers. The Aboriginal Health Research Fellowships are intended to support and increase the number of health professionals with Aboriginal health research skills and experience.

Student Travel Grants for the 2010 Division of Atmospheric and Space Physics (DASP) Meeting and the 2010 Canadian GeoSpace Monitoring (CGSM) Science Meeting. The Canadian Space Agency is pleased to offer subsidies to Canadian students to help defray travel costs to the venue of the meetings, meals and accommodations. Any costs incurred beyond the amount of the subsidy are the responsibility of the student.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide undergraduate and health professional students with opportunities to undertake research projects with established health researchers in an environment that provides strong mentorship. In addition, the intent of the initiative is to develop human resources and expertise to facilitate the translational research objectives of CIHR (including clinical research). Furthermore, this opportunity targets the early stage of the student’s academic training to encourage the pursuit of research in areas of strategic interest to CIHR’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) and CIHR’s Institute of Aging (IA).

The TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund will support First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis* nurses at the Bachelor, Master’s, PhD and Nurse Practitioner levels. This fund aims to support Canadian Aboriginal nursing students who intend to practice nursing preferably in Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal health settings or any health settings.

The primary focus of the Canadian Nurses Foundation Scholarship Program is to provide students with financial assistance on a timely and fair basis.
Canadian Nurses Foundation scholarships are awarded based on merit.
To be eligible the applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada; must be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College; normally be enrolled in Nursing PhD, and if not (health related field) must provide a rationale for how their studies will promote advancement in nursing.
Please note that RNs doing thesis work are also eligible.

To be eligible the applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in Canada; must be studying in Canada at a Canadian university or college; RNs enrolled in a Master of Nursing Program; and/or non-nurses who are in a nursing program which will qualify them as RNs at the Master’s level.

For the 2010-2011 competition, fellowships are being offered for research in the field of Life Sciences (e.g.: biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology). The fellowships offered alternate each year between the fields of Life Sciences and Engineering/Pure and Applied Sciences.

The Collaborative Research Grant Program is intended for researchers who wish to conduct an occupational health and safety research project. The work may include studies, analyses, conception or development carried out according to a scientific process and likely to contribute to the advancement of knowledge. The Program research objectives are defined in collaboration with the IRSST and fall within the priority themes.

Part of the Nasivvik Centre’s mandate involves the support of research and training for students. This year, the Nasivvik Centre is pleased to announce its seventh call for Summer Student Research Awards 2010 (undergraduate level).
The Nasivvik Centre will provide funding for undergraduate students to gain experience by participating in research during the summer months (May-August). Funding support shall be at the CIHR established level of $1,313/month for four months with a maximum award of $5,252. Applications for funding should be made by the researcher supervising/hiring the student.

Research Fellow Awards provide funding to researchers with less than five years experience (post graduate degree) and working under the supervision of a research sponsor. Proposals may request up to $75,000 for one year.

A postdoctoral scholarship is offered by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Sainte-Justine Research Center in partnership with the Mentor-Canadian Institutes of Health Research Training Program in Musculoskeletal Health. The CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center musculoskeletal disease research team is a worldwide authority in the field of spinal deformity. The research team excells in everything from prevention to detection and investigation to the development of less invasive treatments. The team possesses significant expertise in various research fields including molecular biology, genetics of musculoskeletal diseases, biomechanics and biomedical engineering, diagnosis, development of therapeutic tools and readaptation.

The Investigator Award Program supports accomplished assistant professors undertaking their first independent investigations in cancer immunology or general immunology. A four-year grant, the award provides flexibility and a degree of stability during this very challenging period.

The primary goal of the CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program is to further develop international collaborative efforts between researchers. The short term goal is to enable promising individuals to be mentored by prominent Canadian researchers. The long term objective of the Program is to enable promising scientists and clinicians from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC), as identified by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations (UN), to be exposed to some of the best science, laboratories and training environments in Canada. The next two rounds of this program will focus on sub continental South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The goals of the Program are to encourage a broad spectrum of foreign post-doctoral scholars (PhDs, MDs or health professionals) to train in health and health related areas which in the long term, would lead to the development of sustainable programs to help people in developing countries.

Up to two Harkness awards for mid-career health services and health policy researchers, decision makers (health system managers, clinical leaders, and government policy makers) or journalists are awarded annually through open competition. Up to two Canadian Harkness Associates are selected each year. While Canadian Associates are not expected to reside in the United States for the 12 months, the recipients are fully integrated into the Harkness Fellowships, undertake a parallel research project or case study at their home institution, and participate in all five Harkness fellowship seminars during the course of the year.

NARSAD’s Independent Investigator Award Program provides support for investigators during the critical period between the initiation of research and the receipt of sustained funding. A two-year award up to $50,000 per year (maximum of $100,000 for two years) is provided to scientists at the associate professor level or equivalent, who are clearly independent and have won national competitive support as a principal investigator. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to schizophrenia, major affective disorders, or other serious mental illnesses. The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities.
