Students must be registered in a graduate program at a BC post-secondary institution. Preference will be given to doctoral students, who have a longer program and so will presumably gain more benefit from the training, but Master’s students are also invited to apply. The proposed work must be carried out in a BCPN member laboratory, or at any proteomics laboratory outside BC. Sloan Research FellowshipsDetails: Sloan webpageDeadline: September 15, 2008Agency: Alfred P. Sloan Foundation The Sloan Research Fellowships were established in 1955 to provide support and recognition to scientists, often in their first appointments to university faculties, who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support. Financial assistance at this crucial point, even in modest amounts, often pays handsome dividends later to society. Selection procedures for the Sloan Research Fellowships are designed to identify those who show the most outstanding promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge. Sloan Research Fellows, once chosen, are free to pursue whatever lines of inquiry are of the most compelling interest to them. Their Sloan funds can be applied to a wide variety of uses for which other more restricted funds such as research project grants cannot usually be employed. Former Fellows report that this flexibility often gives the Fellowships a value well beyond their dollar amounts. Duchesnay FellowshipDetails: CFWH webpageDeadline: September 25, 2008Agency: Canadian Foundation For Women’s Health The Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health is in a position to attribute two Duchesnay fellowships every year to resident students in obstetrics and gynaecology who desire to complete an elective in a health care center of a developing country. Idea to Innovation (I2I) ProgramDetails: NSERC webpageDeadline: September 26, 2008Agency: NSERCThe program provides funding to college and university faculty members, through defined stages, for research and development activities leading to technology transfer to a new or established Canadian company. Two distinct funding phases are proposed which are characterized by the maturity of the technology or the involvement of an early-stage investment entity (see Partner Eligibility below for definition) or an industrial partner. These phases are limited in time. In the first phase, the direct costs of research will be entirely supported by NSERC; in the second phase, they will be shared with a private partner. The technology development may begin with a Phase I (Reduction-to-Practice Stage – i.e., demonstrating that the innovation is sufficiently tested and will work for its intended purpose) project followed by a Phase II (Technology Enhancement) project or, if the development is at a later stage, it can start directly with a Phase II project. In any case, a maximum of three years’ funding will be available for any given project.
