IDRC Doctoral Research Awards are intended to promote the growth of Canadian and developing-country capacity in research on sustainable and equitable development from an international perspective.
These awards are intended for field research in one or more developing countries. Research proposals that include comparative research between a developing country and Canada or have a Canadian component, even if it is not a comparative research, will not be considered for this competition.

IDRC’s Graduate Research Awards on Climate Change and Water

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) supports research in developing countries to promote growth and development. The result is innovative, lasting local solutions that aim to bring choice and change to those who need it most. IDRC’s Climate Change and Water Program (CCW) helps developing country researchers to understand the consequences of climate change on water resources and to find ways to improve the ability of citizens and governments to adapt to the changing environment.
The purpose of CCW’s Adaptation H2O Graduate Research Awards is to build the research capacity in developing countries by providing awards to graduate students working on subjects related to climate change and water.

The Bentley Cropping Systems Fellowship

The research should seek cropping system changes that will lead to: sustainable and increased crop yields; production of more and improved animal feed; improved soil and water conservation; improved weed control, and/or biological fixation of nitrogen. Projects should be planned and executed in cooperation with an international agricultural research centre, or with a developing-country institution involved in agricultural research that has an applied on-farm orientation.

IDRC Internship Awards

The main goal of the Internship Awards is to provide exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff. Internships are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.

Canadian Window on International Development Awards

Successful candidates will propose comparative research requiring data from both Canada and a developing country to better understand the common, interrelated problem/issue, identified by the applicant. Selection will favor proposals that demonstrate:
• the relevance of the research topic for Canada and for the developing country or countries being studied; and
• the close linkage between the international and national component of the topic.
Successful proposals will also identify the potential for Canada and the developing country to learn from one another in dealing with the shared problem or issue.

John G. Bene Fellowship

This fellowship provides assistance to Canadian graduate students undertaking research on the relationship between forest resources and the social, economic, cultural, and environmental welfare of people in developing countries. The successful candidate will be the one whose work most benefits the lives of the less privileged people in the developing country.
In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, the Centre Training and Awards Program is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia.
