Priority Announcements on New Investigator Salary Award competitions offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas or mandates. Applications are submitted through the "201009MSH" competition of the New Investigator Salary Award: 2010-2011 funding opportunity.
The New Investigator Salary Award program is designed to provide outstanding New Investigators the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their independence in initiating and conducting health research through provision of a contribution to their salary. A New Investigator is defined as a researcher who has held a full time research appointment for a period of 0 to 60 months as of the September competition deadline.

The Clinician-Scientist program has two phases. Phase 1 provides stipends for up to six years of training support. Phase 2 provides a contribution to the salary of the recipient for up to six years.
This program (Phase 1) is directed towards highly qualified and motivated clinicians who have been identified by a Canadian medical school or dental school as having strong potential to become clinician scientists.
For Industry-Partnered Programs in this launch, candidates must secure the sponsorship of an eligible Rx&D member company before a registration can be submitted.

As outlined in the CIHR Institute of Genetics (IG) Strategic Plan, the IG recognizes the need to increase and foster clinical genetics research in Canada. In response, the IG created the Clinical Investigatorship Award to increase researcher capacity in this critical area.
The IG Clinical Investigatorship Award affords recipients the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to initiate and conduct research - in the area of clinical genetics - by contributing to their salary. This award is designed to provide protected time for early-career clinical investigators to undertake clinical or translational genetics research.

The specific objective of this funding opportunity is to further strengthen the Canadian clinical research endeavour by increasing the number of clinician-investigators working within the IG’s mandate. Research on the human and model genomes and on all aspects of genetics, basic biochemistry and cell biology related to health and disease, including the translation of knowledge into health policy and practice, and the societal implications of genetic discoveries.

• To increase access to First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit health information that will benefit Aboriginal health leads, communities and/or organizations;
• To facilitate knowledge translation between First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit individuals, communities and organizations and members of the academic community;
• To help off-set the costs of travel, accommodation, registration fees and other related expenses for First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit individuals to present at the 20th International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference on Health Promotion, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland July 11-15, 2010.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide undergraduate and health professional students with opportunities to undertake research projects with established health researchers in an environment that provides strong mentorship. In addition, the intent of the initiative is to develop human resources and expertise to facilitate the translational research objectives of CIHR (including clinical research). Furthermore, this opportunity targets the early stage of the student’s academic training to encourage the pursuit of research in areas of strategic interest to CIHR’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) and CIHR’s Institute of Aging (IA).

The CIHR HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research (CBR) Program assists community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations and institutions in developing the knowledge necessary to carry out their HIV/AIDS work in the most effective manner, and in creating expertise within these communities to conduct their own research. The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:
• To help ensure a reliable supply of highly qualified personnel to develop knowledge in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic through community-based research; and
• To provide recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master’s degree in a community-based research field related to HIV/AIDS in Canada.
In line with the principles of CBR, applicants and their supervisors are encouraged to consider the engagement of the community in the training plan of the applicant

The course provides substantive and methodological training in human fecundity and fertility, pregnancy and perinatal outcomes, maternal health, fetal growth and development, developmental disabilities, and promising new approaches for studying these outcomes.

The course provides training for clinical and non-clinical scientists who are considering academic careers in studying therapeutics during pregnancy, the perinatal period, and lactation. The main objective of the Institute is to foster the development of a critical mass of researchers and clinicians in this neglected area.

The primary goal of the CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program is to further develop international collaborative efforts between researchers. The short term goal is to enable promising individuals to be mentored by prominent Canadian researchers. The long term objective of the Program is to enable promising scientists and clinicians from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC), as identified by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations (UN), to be exposed to some of the best science, laboratories and training environments in Canada. The next two rounds of this program will focus on sub continental South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The goals of the Program are to encourage a broad spectrum of foreign post-doctoral scholars (PhDs, MDs or health professionals) to train in health and health related areas which in the long term, would lead to the development of sustainable programs to help people in developing countries.

The CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) is dedicated to supporting graduate students and post-doctoral Fellows and to recognizing the research excellence and knowledge translation initiatives of these emerging health services and policy researchers at an early stage in their career. IHSPR will recognize up to three (3) Canadian graduate students and/or post-doctoral Fellows studying in all fields and disciplines related to health services and policy research.

The Canada Graduate Scholarships Master’s Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a Master’s degree in a health related field in Canada. NOTE: This program is largely a university nomination-based program, therefore please refer to your current institution to confirm the institution application deadline which will be BEFORE the CIHR application deadline noted above. Most institutions will manage a pre-selection process to select which of their students’ applications will be put forward to CIHR on the CIHR deadline date. Only applicants that are not registered at a university for the Fall semester prior to the CIHR application deadline will submit their applications directly to CIHR by the above deadline.

Fellowships provide support for highly qualified candidates at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.

The mission of the ICRH is to support research into the causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood vessels, blood, critical and intensive care, and sleep. In addition, ICRH embraces a range of research from fundamental bio-medical and clinical research, to research on health systems, health services, the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health. The Young Investigator (YI) Forum is a major training and educational initiative of CIHR’s Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health. Each year, the YI Forum provides young investigators and trainees with an opportunity to showcase research, interact with senior researchers and faculty, and learn about career development and state of the art research and technologies.
