The new EXTRA fellowships are available to teams composed of two to four individuals who have completed professional training in any health discipline, including medical practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, health managers and policy-makers. It is expected that recipients of EXTRA team fellowships will have completed their initial professional training in the last five to 15 years, have an ongoing commitment to the application of evidence in healthcare, and occupy leadership roles in their organizations. The team applicant(s) must provide strong evidence of support from their organization(s) throughout the tenure of the fellowship.

The Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) program develops capacity and leadership to optimize the use of research evidence in managing Canadian healthcare organizations. EXTRA gives health system managers across Canada the skills to better use research in their daily work, as a way to increase evidence-informed decision-making in the health system.
The EXTRA program targets health service professionals in senior management positions - nurse executives, physician executives, and other health administration executives.

Recognition Awards – Celebrating Leaders in Health Services Research

This award recognizes a health services leader who has successfully implemented evidence-informed innovations in care and service delivery and provides an honorarium of $15,000 to be used to inspire similar innovation across Canada.

Canadian Harkness Associate Award

Up to two Harkness awards for mid-career health services and health policy researchers, decision makers (health system managers, clinical leaders, and government policy makers) or journalists are awarded annually through open competition. Up to two Canadian Harkness Associates are selected each year. While Canadian Associates are not expected to reside in the United States for the 12 months, the recipients are fully integrated into the Harkness Fellowships, undertake a parallel research project or case study at their home institution, and participate in all five Harkness fellowship seminars during the course of the year.

CADRE – Postdoctoral Awards

The award offers qualified researchers the training and experience necessary to establish themselves as independent researchers in applied health services (including nursing) and health policy. In addition to academic study, successful applicants work collaboratively with health system decision makers throughout the training period. Applicants utilize knowledge transfer training and techniques to effectively target dissemination efforts and research uptake. This enrichment will help: translate decision-maker concerns into research questions; communicate the possibilities and limits of research to decision makers; and develop the skills necessary to transfer knowledge to decision makers.
