WERF will provide $175,000 for the development of guidance and tools that lead to a more informed decision-making process for those who select wastewater treatment systems. Providing technical and non-technical users with the ability to quickly learn about system components and determine costs could result in savings when public health officials are tasked with selection of a wastewater treatment system.

WERF is seeking to fund pioneering research that will significantly advance knowledge and understanding in protection and enhancement of water quality or the water environment and that could fundamentally transform how WERF subscribers perform their business. WERF will also consider proposals that would take existing research to the next level of completion, resulting in practical solutions to water quality problems. Proposals in all relevant wastewater and water quality areas are welcome.

WERF’s latest research challenge will address biosolids pathogen risk assessment and the effective communication of results. WERF is making up to $1 million available in funds for researchers to  facilitate use of biosolids pathogens risk assessment methodologies for the purpose of making them generally applicable and available to potential users at the local, state, and national level. A complementary activity will be to ensure that the best risk communications science and practices are available to communicate the results.
