Traditionally, development and demonstration have suffered from a financing gap, making them a weak link in what’s known as the innovation chain. That gap has proved to be a significant barrier to market entry for many Canadian entrepreneurs, especially those involved in developing sustainable technologies, the market for which is still emerging. This gap has had a negative impact on the return of investment for ‘upstream’ research; Canada has not consistently obtained revenues from the successful commercialization of technologies. SDTC supports clean-technology projects through these critical stages—without taking an equity stake, without requiring ownership of intellectual property or any repayment of funds.

SDTC is a not-for-profit corporation created by the Government of Canada to finance and support the late-stage development and pre-commercial demonstration of clean technologies. SDTC is actively seeking applications for technology innovations that deliver clean water, clean soil, clean air, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Technologies that are designed to deal with more than one of these environmental issues simultaneously are of interest. Technologies that deal with clean water or clean soil are specifically encouraged.

The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences funds research that improves the scientific understanding of processes and predictions, provides relevant science to policy makers and improves understanding of the ways in which these challenges affect human health and the natural environment in addition to strengthening Canada’s scientific capacity.
