Junior Investigator Grant Panel Travel Bursary

Agency:
NCIC

The NCIC is pleased to announce a special initiative to allow junior investigators in cancer research to gain knowledge and understanding of the NCIC peer-review process. During the annual NCIC operating grants competition, approximately 500 applications spanning all disciplines of cancer research are evaluated and ranked for funding. A total of fifteen different grant panels in various cancer research disciplines are held on Mondays and Tuesdays for four consecutive weeks beginning January 19th 2009. Selected investigators from across Canada will be provided funds of up to $1,000 to reimburse travel costs to Toronto for two days to observe a particular session of grant reviews during which 3-4 panel meetings will occur. This unique opportunity will provide junior faculty members with an “inside look” at how research grants are reviewed in order to help structure their own grant proposals in future.

Feasibility Grants

Agency:
NCIC

The National Cancer Institute of Canada recognizes that it is difficult to submit a full application for a research grant without having first conducted preliminary studies. Accordingly, a program of feasibility grants has been developed to provide a modest level of funding for such purposes in all research areas. It is suggested that applicants consider carefully the purpose behind, and the appropriate documentation required, for a successful feasibility grant application. Five criteria are suggested: (i) The Feasibility grant application should describe essential work that is necessary prior to the launch of a full study. (ii) The application should include the specific objectives of the Feasibility Study. (iii) The applicants must clearly indicate the criteria to be used in deciding if the objectives of the Feasibility Study have been met and how they propose to decide whether to enter the full study. (iv)The objectives and rationale of the full study to follow should also be detailed. (v) A clear rationale must be presented as to why it is necessary to do the Feasibility Study before the full study can take place.
