Research Development Grants

Agency:
SSHRC

Developing high-quality research depends on establishing and promoting environments necessary for the generation of new knowledge and for experimentation in new methods, approaches and ideas. Such development requires theoretical and methodological experimentation in the early stages of the research process. Accordingly, the Research Development Initiatives (RDI) program supports research that both assesses and elicits the changing directions of research and the evolution of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The program provides short-term support that enables grant holders to develop their research to a point where they are able to submit fully developed proposals to other programs with the aim of producing and effectively disseminating advanced research findings.

SD Tech Fund Projects

Agency:
SDTC

SDTC believes it is critical to build consortia that represent the full spectrum of a technology’s supply chain, involving researchers, product developers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and end customers. To be considered for SDTC funding, applicants should therefore have expertise in sustainable development technology and be part of a project consortium. Eligible projects must focus on the development and demonstration of new technologies that address issues of climate change, clean air, water, and soil quality. The projects must be undertaken primarily in Canada.

Feasibility Grants

Agency:
NCIC

The National Cancer Institute of Canada recognizes that it is difficult to submit a full application for a research grant without having first conducted preliminary studies. Accordingly, a program of feasibility grants has been developed to provide a modest level of funding for such purposes in all research areas. It is suggested that applicants consider carefully the purpose behind, and the appropriate documentation required, for a successful feasibility grant application. Five criteria are suggested: (i) The Feasibility grant application should describe essential work that is necessary prior to the launch of a full study. (ii) The application should include the specific objectives of the Feasibility Study. (iii) The applicants must clearly indicate the criteria to be used in deciding if the objectives of the Feasibility Study have been met and how they propose to decide whether to enter the full study. (iv)The objectives and rationale of the full study to follow should also be detailed. (v) A clear rationale must be presented as to why it is necessary to do the Feasibility Study before the full study can take place.

Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration (EUREKA)

Agency:
NIH

The purpose of the EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) initiative is to foster exceptionally innovative research that, if successful, will have an unusually high impact on the areas of science that are germane to the mission of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes. EUREKA is for new projects, not for continuation of existing projects. Nor is EUREKA for support of pilot projects, i.e., projects of limited scope that are designed primarily to generate data that will enable the PI to seek other funding opportunities. Rather, it is anticipated that EUREKA projects will begin and be completed during the funding period. Before submitting an application, it is extremely important to verify that the proposed research is of interest to at least one of the NIH Institutes that is participating in the EUREKA FOA, since applications that are not germane to the mission of one or more of the participating Institutes will be withdrawn without review.

Highly Innovative Tactics to Interrupt Transmission of HIV (HIT – IT)

Agency:
NIH

The purpose of this initiative entitled “Highly Innovative Tactics to Interrupt Transmission of HIV (HIT-IT)” is to foster exceptionally innovative, high risk, original and/or unique and unconventional research that, if successful, will have an unusually high impact on HIV/AIDS prevention. Applicants to this FOA must articulate how their proposed new idea, approach and rationale: (1) offer a potential solution to interrupt HIV transmission and prevent acquisition, (2) could be unequivocally tested and potentially implemented, (3) differ from current or previous failed approaches, and (4) will contribute, inform, or provide incremental knowledge to the field regardless of the outcome of the proposed work.

Measures and Determinants of Smokeless Tobacco Use, Prevention, and Cessation

Agency:
NIH

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), encourages the submission of research grant applications from scientists who propose to study the factors that mediate initiation, use, and cessation of smokeless tobacco, to understand the relationship with other tobacco products, to develop methods for studying smokeless tobacco products and related behaviors in humans. The overall goal is to develop an evidence base to inform smokeless tobacco control efforts, and to develop effective ways to limit the spread and promote cessation of smokeless tobacco use.

Communities, workplaces, schools and ethnic groups would all be considered examples of "populations". This funding opportunity strongly encourages close collaboration between program implementers and researchers but it will not support situations where the implementer and the researcher are the same person/ entity. The program must be outside of the control of the researcher to be considered for this opportunity.
