WorkSafeBC Background

  • WorkSafeBC promotes workplace health and safety for workers and employers of BC
  • The Research Secretariat’s mission is to support high-quality scientific research and knowledge transfer that will contribute to:
    • Improving health and safety in BC workplaces
    • Fostering successful rehabilitation and return-to-work of injured workers
    • Ensuring fair compensation for workers suffering injury or illness on the job

 

Research Program

  • Focus on Tomorrow is WorkSafeBC’s Research Program administered by the Research Secretariat
  • The Research Secretariat provides funding for "rigorous, scientific study, and practical, shop-floor projects on workplace health and safety and workers’ compensation issues relevant to BC or WorkSafeBC’s partners"

 

Funding Streams

 

Innovation at Work - a Synopsis

  • Any Canadian resident is eligible
  • Development of practical, shop-floor solutions that translate new knowledge into practice, or that solve specific problems in the workplace
  • Normally up to $50,000 for one year; non-renewable
  • Small scale projects that will promote increased interaction among workplace parties, organizations, and/or researchers

 

Research Competition Process

  • Request for Proposals (RFP) distributed or posted on WorkSafeBC website
    • Provides overview of the funding program
    • WorkSafeBC funding priorities are introduced for the current competition
    • WorkSafeBC’s partner priorities are also introduced
    • Application procedures are outlined
  • Also applies to the Research at Work category of funding offered by WorkSafeBC

 

Research Priorities

  • There are 5 general themes:
    • Occupational disease, injury and health services
    • Intervention research
    • Compensation, disability management and return-to-work
    • Changing nature of work and work environment
    • Transferring research knowledge to the workplace
  • Every year, new or recurring issues are identified
    • Priorities are assembled from several sources
  • Also applies to the Research at Work category of funding offered by WorkSafeBC

 

A Three-Step Review Process

  1. Preliminary review by the Research Secretariat
  2. Peer review by experts
  3. Relevance review by a cross-divisional committee of WorkSafeBC staff and an external advisory committee
  • Also applies to the Research at Work category of funding offered by WorkSafeBC
