Research Grants

All Research Grants have a co-funding requirement. That is, applicants must have obtained a commitment for the applicable amount of co-funding for their application to be considered. ABRS will place no restrictions on the source of this contribution, but applicants will need to be aware of the rules of other granting agencies, which may limit how funds contributed by them may be used. Salary may be included as co-funding. However, in an instance where two projects are of equal scientific merit but one has salary co-funding and the other cash co-funding, the project with cash co-funding will be ranked higher. In-kind contributions will be recognised but will not replace the requirement for additional co-funding input. All Research Grants awarded in the 2010/2011 grants round will be of three years duration.

Research Program

Funding research projects leading to social and economic benefits to Canada is a priority of both the NCE program and AllerGen. Knowledge translation is the all-important link between discovery and development. It is the bridge between the lab and real life. Proposals in this call will be reviewed for their potential for end-user applications. Translational AllerGen research aims to transform scientific discoveries arising from the laboratory, clinic, or population studies into clinical applications to reduce the incidence, morbidity, mortality and social and economic burden of allergies, asthma and related immune diseases. Translational research typically looks at two areas of translation. The first is the process of applying discoveries generated during research in the laboratory and preclinical studies, to the development of trials and studies in humans. The second area of translation concerns research aimed at enhancing the adoption of best practices in the community.

Research Grants

The Alva Foundation funds organizations conducting research and/or developing services that address significant risk factors in early childhood development, prenatal through four years of age. It is our philosophy that healthy childhood development sets in place many mental, physical, and social attributes that determine the ability to develop into a healthy adult. We are interested in helping organizations that work in the areas of prevention. Research will look into risk factors that limit healthy early childhood development, prenatal to four years old; including but not limited to risk factors of a genetic, medical, societal and neurological nature. Increasingly, new research is proving that healthy early childhood development sets in place, often for life, many neurological, social, and learning factors and abilities. Applications will be considered from across Canada.

BCRF – AACR Grants for Translational Breast Cancer Research

The BCRF-AACR Grants for Translational Breast Cancer Research are a joint effort of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research. The grants provide direct support for innovative cancer research projects designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and application of new agents to treat breast cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent. Laboratory-based projects must present plans with clinical collaborators indicating how the work will be translated into the clinic. Similarly, clinical studies must show how the work was derived from basic preclinical work and how results will be channeled back to laboratory-based collaborators. The AACR will award 3 two-year grants of up to $250,000 in this cycle.

RFP: Source Water Protection Cost/Benefit Tool

Effective source water protection (SWP) programs consider multiple water and land use management goals (e.g., public health protection, ecosystem protection, competing uses, etc.) and typically require extensive collaboration with related stakeholders (e.g., agriculture, industry, municipal wastewater managers, stormwater managers, etc.). Because SWP is largely a voluntary action with little or no regulatory mechanisms for enforcing source water management practices, SWP programs must succeed on their own merits from practical, political, and economic standpoints. Water resource managers faced with tight operating budgets and competing demands for financial and human resources need access to the full range of costs and benefits for specific practices before developing a SWP plan or program. Compounding this challenge are two prominent factors: (1) Source water protection is inherently site-specific, and (2) Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are successful in one situation may not be practical or appropriate in another situation. A web-enabled tool that provides a high level “road map” that can orient a SWP novice to the different types of BMPs and organizational approaches that may be more or less appropriate for a given situation, and a tool that estimates the full range of site-specific costs and benefits for those source water protection practices will be valuable for water resource managers and other watershed stakeholders. This research will develop a user-friendly, web-enabled tool for water resource managers and other watershed stakeholders to estimate the triple bottom line (i.e. economic, social and environmental) costs and benefits of specific source water protection practices.

RFP: Synthesis Document On Pipe Location and Leakage Management

The drinking water industry is capital intensive, with the majority of that capital being buried pipes, valves, etc., associated with the distribution system. The maintenance and repair of buried infrastructure is becoming increasingly important due to concerns associated with the potential health, economic and societal impacts of infrastructure failure. In addition, infrastructure location and leak detection technologies that were the topic of research only a few years ago are now more evolved, available, and affordable. Many small systems have limited resources to apply to pipe location and leakage management, resulting in added costs and/or wasted water. While considerable research and application experience has been gained in the last few years on pipe locating and leak detecting technology, this information has not been presented in a manner specifically framed for use by small systems. Furthermore, some emerging technologies and improved practices may be particularly effective for small systems. This project focuses on determining which pipe location and leakage management technologies are most applicable for small systems and how that information can be transferred to small system operators effectively. This research will produce a technical guidance manual, along with recommendations for outreach that will assist small system operators to locate buried pipe and manage water leakage more effectively. The project findings will be synthesized from existing research results and case studies.

Development of a Protocol to Predict the Formation of Nitrosamines While Minimizing the Formation of Regulated DBPs

Objective: Since the promulgation of the D/DBP Rule and the Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, many surface-water plants are using chloramines for post-disinfection with primary disinfection from a stronger oxidant (chlorine, chlorine dioxide or ozone). However, an emerging concern with the use of chloramines is the formation of nitrosamines. Of all nitrosamines, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) has received most of the attention. Recent research is showing that pretreatment with chlorine, chlorine dioxide or ozone can destroy or transform some of the NDMA precursors.
This project would develop a bench-scale test protocol to determine the formation of both nitrosamines and regulated disinfection by-products (DBPs) for a wide range of drinking water qualities under conditions that are representative of typical distribution systems. The protocol will then be used for a range of waters to evaluate the formation and control of nitrosamines while minimizing the formation of regulated DBPs for various pre-oxidation configurations at typical CT levels.

Interpreting Real-Time Online Monitoring Data For Water Quality Event Detection

Historically, distribution system water quality monitoring has been used to simply maintain water quality within given parameters. For this application, a high-and-low alarm setting for individual distribution system monitors is sufficient to give operators notice when water quality is approaching unacceptable levels. However, with ever present threat of water contamination through cross connections, backflow, or intentional activities, the objectives of the monitoring has moved towards being able to detect and identify water quality abnormalities that cannot be explained by incidents at the plant or by hydraulic events such as operation of a tank or valves.
The proposed research project should develop an event detection system that will retrieve water quality and operating data from a SCADA system and use some type of advanced correlation techniques, statistical analyses, clustering techniques, and/or other algorithms to examine these data, compare them with predictions based on historical utility data, and output a system status indicator which can alert a system operator to a potential problem.
The project would develop a universal and reliable framework for interpreting real-time online monitoring data by examining and correlating existing sensor and hydraulic data as well as operational information to identify water quality abnormalities and minimize false alarms.

Research Grants

AICR’s aim is to support fundamental research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. The emphasis is on basic, as opposed to clinical research. We will consider proposals in which a mixture of basic and clinical research is proposed. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research and many substantially clinical applications are beyond the remit of AICR. Before submitting applications of a clinical or semi-clinical nature, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact AICR for advice. The Association is keen to support scientists establishing their first research group, work in areas that are relatively under-funded or unexplored, and pump-priming or preliminary research projects and projects involving international collaboration. The award of grants is determined by a Scientific Committee, comprised of eminent cancer researchers, who advise the Board on the most appropriate areas for support.

ATS Foundation Tobacco-Dependence Research Fund Grants

The grant will be targeted to research in basic science, genetics, neurogenetics, pharmacology, neuropharmacology, and clinical intervention and treatment in the area of tobacco dependence. Preference will be given to projects that, because of their novelty, require bridge funding before becoming competitive for other funding mechanisms. Applicants may request up to $50,000/year for 2 years for salaries, supplies or a combination of these two. A primary goal of the ATS Research Program is to enable new faculty-level investigators to make the transition to careers as established investigators. Partnerships between junior and senior investigators are strongly encouraged, particularly for new investigators who are within 1 to 5 years of the completion of their training. Both US and non-US based investigators are encouraged to apply. At least one of the investigators must be an ATS member at the time of application, and the principal investigator must be an ATS member at the time that the grant is awarded.

Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research

BWF is interested particularly in supporting investigators who will bring novel ideas and new approaches to translational research. Proposed activities may draw on recent advances in the basic biomedical sciences—including such fields as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and pharmacology—that provide a wealth of opportunities for studying and alleviating human disease. For the purposes of BWF’s award, translational research may involve studies in these broad areas: etiology, pathogenesis, and mechanisms of disease (particularly studies with direct application to disease prevention and treatment); clinical knowledge, improved diagnosis (including development of new biomarkers, diagnostic methods, or devices), natural history of disease, and biomedical informatics -this includes the use of large clinical and genomic datasets for the purpose of generating and testing hypotheses; disease management (including therapeutics aimed at molecular targets), molecular epidemiology, and limited small-scale clinical studies involving ‘first-in-humans’ testing of novel approaches.

Career Awards for Medical Scientists

Research in the medical sciences provides a firm foundation for improving human health. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is committed to fostering the development of the next generation of academic medical scientists. By providing funding to help bridge the gap between the postdoctoral and early faculty years, BWF hopes to bolster the careers of the most promising up and coming scientists. But BWF’s support doesn’t stop with its funding. Through biennial meetings and mentoring networks, BWF helps provide vital career advice to give scientists, early in their careers, the information they need to be successful.

Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has supported research in infectious disease since 1981, when it began funding modern molecular approaches to understanding what have been called the great neglected diseases – malaria, the pathogenic fungi, and human parasites – that primarily affect people in underdeveloped countries. Since that time, much more attention has been paid to the urgent needs of these fields. In 2000, the Fund decided to turn its attention to the larger issues of human-pathogen interactions in these infectious diseases and others, opening the door for funding work in bacterial and viral diseases. BWF’s Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program is designed to incorporate elements of previously funded areas of research, and to focus primarily on the interaction of pathogens with their human hosts.

The Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program provides opportunities for assistant professors to bring multidisciplinary approaches to the study of human infectious diseases. This award provides $500,000 over a period of five years ($100,000 per year). The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study the pathogenesis of infectious disease at its most fundamental level—the points where human and microbial systems connect. The program supports research that sheds light on the fundamentals that affect the outcomes of this encounter: how colonization, infection, commensalism and other relationships play out at levels ranging from molecular interactions to systemic ones.

IDEA Grants

IDEA grants support innovative, new research ideas that are speculative, but have the potential for advancing scientific knowledge. These are small-scale, one-year pilot studies or investigations of concepts to permit the investigator to test out new ideas, which, although based on good science, are outside of existing conventional research paradigms and could be deemed speculative. The expectation is that these ideas, once explored, will lead to the development of proposals for more extensive research grants.

KT Grants – Knowledge Translations Initiatives

Knowledge translation (KT) should be an integral and ongoing part of the research cycle. Research on KT - that is, research that aims to generate new strategies for effective knowledge translation - is a growing and relevant research domain. National funding agencies, such as CIHR, have held strategic initiatives to fund research on KT. For this reason, CBCRA does not currently plan to sponsor a strategic RFA on KT. Rather, the CBCRA KT Initiative will focus on ensuring and facilitating the inclusion of appropriate KT activities in each proposal submitted through the regular operating grants competition and to introduce mechanisms to facilitate the KT activities of researchers.

Pandemic Outbreak Team Leader - Catalyst Grant

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to contribute to Canadian preparedness for outbreak research and support Canada’s pandemic and influenza research community. This goal of this program is to provide application development funds to team leaders with expertise in the areas of influenza and pandemic who can bring together a research team in key areas that will require a research response when an outbreak occurs. Through peer review, CIHR and PHAC will identify the top team leader in each of the relevant research areas described in this funding opportunity. Applications will include a short outline of the research approach and why they are the best candidate to lead a team in this area. When an outbreak occurs, it is anticipated that additional research funding will be available and the identified team leaders will be asked to describe the members of their team, their research plan and a budget in an abbreviated application for expedited peer review and funding.

Influenza Research Network

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to further strengthen Canadian research in preparation for a potential influenza pandemic by supporting the establishment of an Influenza Research Network (IRN). The Network will conduct applied public health research respecting: 1) the development and testing of appropriate methodologies to rapidly evaluate candidate vaccines for safety and immunogenicity in persons of all ages; and 2) the development and testing of suitable population-based methods to evaluate vaccine effectiveness and safety following release for general use. It is anticipated that this targeted investment will ensure surge capacity and mechanisms for rapid data collection, analysis and evaluation before and during a pandemic; as well as ensure a readily trained and available research capacity. It is also anticipated that the establishment of the IRN will aid in the continued development of pandemic preparedness plans. The establishment of an IRN will mobilize nation-wide research experience and talent in vaccine evaluation. The IRN will assemble a critical mass of experience and talent by linking individual researchers and/or research centers involved in vaccine evaluation, building on their core competencies and coordinating their efforts. Collectively, they will be positioned to achieve more than the sum of their individual efforts.

New Gant Competition: Predictive Oncology

Predictive oncology is a field of medicine that is advancing rapidly and becoming a critical factor in predicting a person’s risk for cancer, as well as refining the diagnosis and developing personalized treatment. Breast cancer is not a single disease entity, but a group of diseases that can be classified using molecular markers to define groups with different responses to therapy and distinct prognoses. Research supported by this competition could lead to the discovery of molecular markers and approaches that predict which patients will benefit the most from specific therapies, in essence, customizing treatments to achieve optimal outcomes. Other research foci could explore elements of breast cancer that more precisely indicate the level of aggressiveness, thereby enabling more effective, tailored treatments.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA) is pleased to announce its sixteenth annual research grants competition adjudicated through the NCIC. The submission deadline is October 15, 2008. Awards will commence on July 1, 2009. The grant year for CBCRA is normally July 1 through June 30. The CBCRA operating grants competition provides research support to individuals formally affiliated with Canadian universities or other recognized Canadian institutions. It is expected that the institution hosting the Principal Investigator will provide basic equipment, research facilities and administrative services. CBCRA grants will support the purchase and maintenance of expendable supplies and services, equipment and the salaries of individuals providing substantial contribution to the research, e.g., graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, technical and professional assistants and members of the lay community. CBCRA grants do not provide for personal salary support for grantees. While Principal Investigators, Co-Principal Investigators and Co-Applicants are excluded from salary support, Additional Authors, who contribute intellectually to the application, are recognized separately from grantees and may receive salary support from the grant.

Special Research Competition on Psychosocial Aspects of Breast Cancer

This initiative promotes psychosocial research in breast cancer. Psychosocial oncology research covers a broad content area. For this initiative, psychosocial oncology is defined as any aspect of cancer care concerned with the understanding and treatment of social, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and functional aspects of cancer, at all stages of the disease trajectory from prevention to bereavement (Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology). Psychosocial oncology involves a whole-person approach to cancer care, addressing a range of human needs that can improve or optimize quality of life for affected individuals and their networks. A key goal in breast cancer research is to preserve and, where possible, to enhance quality of life as quickly and as fully as possible.

Innovation Grants

Innovation grants have been created to support innovative, creative problem solving in cancer research. As competition for grant funding increases, peer review panels become more conservative and risk averse, emphasizing feasibility more than innovation. The goal of this new CCSRI grant program is to support unconventional concepts, approaches or methodologies to address problems in cancer research. Innovation projects will include elements of creativity, curiosity, investigation, exploration and opportunity. Successful projects may be based on “high risk” ideas, but will have the potential for “high reward” (i.e. to significantly impact our understanding of cancer and generate new approaches to combat the disease by introducing novel ideas into use or practice).

Applications are invited from current Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute grant holders across all disciplines to submit pilot studies that will translate their research findings into identifying effective interventions that reduce the cancer incidence in the human population.

The purpose of this initiative is to fund research in prevention and risk reduction priority areas as identified by the Canadian Cancer Society:
• tobacco control
• occupational and environmental carcinogens (O&E)
• UV radiation exposure
• healthy eating and physical activity
• basic research including better understanding of cancer etiology and gene-based studies related to risk reduction and prevention
The Society hopes to stimulate group interaction based on the premise that high impact work requires complementary skills and can be best carried out through a group effort. A central focus of this funding program is the requirement that investigators work collaboratively with the Canadian Cancer Society and clearly describe how the proposed research will address key cancer prevention and/or risk reduction priorities to influence Canadian Cancer Society programs, activities, and/or public policy work.

Impact Grants

The Impact Grant program is intended to contribute to the scientific idea ‘pipeline’ by supporting significant progression in cancer research programs, from individual investigators or multidisciplinary teams, that are in the continuum from basic high impact discovery to translational work of direct relevance to the clinic. Impact grants will accelerate and focus the knowledge gained from scientific findings, in the short or long term, into outcomes that will significantly advance understanding of cancer and improve scientific knowledge, which will result in optimized patient care, improved cancer treatment or reduced cancer burden. Impact grants are to provide funding to support ideas that promote major advancement in research programs, whether at the fundamental discovery stage (such as studies involving model organisms that demonstrate potential for impact) through to applied research (such as patient or population based proposals).
Info session (webinar): December 15, 2011 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. EST

CFWH General Research Grants

The benefits, both short and long-term, of research into health are well recognized. Since the early 1900s, women’s longevity in North America has doubled from 39 years to 81 years as a result of, among other things, advances made through health research. Each year, a call for proposals goes out to medical researchers working in the field of women’s health. These proposals then undergo a blind peer review process to ensure that the most outstanding projects are funded. The successful research projects are recognized at a special ceremony during the Annual Clinical Meeting of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.
