Objectives

This workshop plans to attract new projects, taking advantage of pre/post opportunities and evaluation of the 2010 legacy for Vancouver and public health in BC. Environmental sustainability and public health are a focus. Networking and research project clearinghouse functions around the Games will be provided through post-workshop activities.

Afternoon breakout sessions

These sessions provide participants with networking opportunities to join forming research teams and projects, or to get more information about these activities to develop other projects. Note that the traffic-related workshop is a continuation across two sessions, and not a repeated session.

Student volunteers will be sought in each session to report back at the closing panel. If you’re an interested student, please let us know.

1. Traffic-related air pollution (discussion continues in Session 2)

2. The Effect of Olympic Years on Physical Activity Across Canada and North America

3. Conceptualizing Mega-Event Impacts
Leader: Rob vanWynsberghe
This breakout session will seek participants’ views on the following questions:
What are social, environmental, and economic impacts?
How should research address the question of when impacts begin and end?
How does research address intangible impacts?
What is the ideal process for comparing and contrasting mega-event impacts across time and space?

The session will also encourage participants to bring their questions to the group.

Travel Bursaries

The Network has limited, capped funds to support members’ travel to attend this event. Funds will be offered case-by-case and will be used to encourage province-wide and cross-disciplinary representation. If you are interested in being considered for a travel bursary of reimbursed travel and accommodations costs, please send an email to our office, outlining your role in environmental and occupational health research (student, junior researcher, etc.) and your estimated costs.

The BCEOHRN Spring 2009 Workshop has been planned by the BCEOHRN 2010 Initiatives Working Group.

Research Project Funding

At the workshop participants will be invited to form new or join existing research projects. BCEOHRN provides a limited number of research capacity development grants for such projects.

Note that all projects must be completed by March 31, 2010, the end date for funding of BCEOHRN. No extensions to this deadline can be granted.
